9th Grade Curriculum

Starting in 2023, Union is offering freshman classes in aerospace.

The classes will give students firsthand experiences at learning how to fly a plane through a simulation. Think of it like a really cool looking video game.

Students can even actually accrue private pilot license hours when a certified flight instructor is present. The school is working with a bunch of different groups to help throughout the course.

The simulator is fully hands on. It has three monitors designed to show and teach students the mechanics of flying a plane.

“It feels like you’re in the cockpit. We’ve got the yoke, the pedals, the controls, so they’re really going to learn about the flight controls and learn about those things,” said Kenneth Moore, executive director of Secondary Education at Union Public Schools.

Moore says aerospace is Oklahoma’s second highest industry behind energy, oil, and gas. This introduction class paves the way for students to land good paying jobs after high school.

“It’s quickly growing. There’s a huge demand for workers. There’s an acute pilot shortage and like I said, the workforce again,” said Moore.

This introductory course focuses on a lot of mechanics and the history of flying. It’s laying the foundation for when the district eventually has a full-scale aerospace academy—with bigger plans for upper grades.

“We’re actually going to buy a full cockpit simulator so when the kids start going to the innovation lab next year, which is where we’re going to house upper classman as we grow, they’re going sit inside of the cockpit which is a pretty neat opportunity for our kids, too,” said Moore.

While the program is just taking off—Moore says it’s spot on the with the district’s mission to making sure students are career ready.

“One of the neatest things I heard is when you see a plane in the sky, there’s dozens of jobs on the ground that make that flight possible, so we want to expand those opportunities and have kids aware of what they can do as an aerospace career,” said Moore.

Union Public Schools believes it is important that all students either attend and finish college and/or choose a career they find rewarding for the rest of their lives.

The Freshman Academy offers classes related to construction. Classes are held on site. 

Union also offers construction classes at the Union Innovation Lab.

Union works with local industry to provide opportunities for students to learn about possible careers in this field.

The Freshman Academy offers an English Learner curriculum to those students for whom English is not a primary language. Students participate in small group instruction that focuses on the English language.

The Freshman Academy provides many extracurricular activities and organizations for students. These organizations include everything from academic teams to athletics and spirit teams.  

The purpose of the National Junior Honor Society is to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, and to encourage the development of character and citizenship in students at the Freshman Academy.

Student Council

Freshmen may participate in Student Council.  

Students can join Union’s FIRST Tech Challenge teams, The Bazinga Project and Project Agnizab.

Union students are mentored by older students and STEM leaders in the community to learn about engineering design, programming, and documentation.  

Each year the students are given a new game they have to analyze and then design a robot to complete certain tasks in a timed and competitive setting.

Since 2014, Union’s team has won numerous awards and participated in the state championship.

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Math) at Union Public Schools is an interdisciplinary approach to learning that encourages students to inquire, explore, and problem solve. 

Student of the Month is a recognition program for students who have been nominated by their teachers.

Any student that just completed the 9th or 10th grades needing the 8th grade reading proficiency and proof of enrollment form for their driver’s permit, transcripts, or other academic information, will need to contact the Registrar’s office at the High School by calling 918-357-7204 or 918-357-7205, or going by the High School, 6636 S. Mingo Road. Please provide 24-hour notice for such requests.

The Union High School Freshman Academy is concerned with the social and physical development of each individual.  Group interaction and utilization of community resources will further encourage each student’s social and physical maturity.

Administrators, counselors and teachers share a relationship of cooperation with a sharing of experiences, knowledge and enthusiasm in a professional atmosphere.

The teacher is to provide the structured environment and inspiration which are conducive to student growth.  He or she also shares in the efforts of the school to plan, structure and implement activities which contribute positively to various phases of moral, intellectual, social and physical growth.

Students will be learning new concepts and continuing the practice of basic skills; at the same time they will be involved in the process of learning how to learn.  Emphasis will be placed on communication and math-science skills. The students will also be given opportunities to explore new areas of knowledge and interests in all curricula.

All students will be encouraged to explore, to discover and to appreciate their world and their own ability to change or contribute to it. Academic content and the well-being of the child are of equal importance.

The school works in close cooperation with home, community and civic organizations to complement the activities of each for the complete development of the student.
